The Only Onion Dip

Don’t act like Onion Dip is beneath you. Onion Dip is good and it’s the perfect foil for a wavy chip.  This is not the packet version. This is the roll up your sleeves, but it is worth it version.

A word about Bon Appetit: Bon Appetit is a seasoning blend that used to be popular but it has fallen out of favour because it uses MSG. If you don’t want to add it, or if you can’t find it, Just add celery salt and move on with your life. If you don’t mind a li’l MSG in your life, here’s the McCormick’s Bon Appetit substitute recipe (or sometimes you can find it at baking supply or bulk stores.)

  • 1 tablespoon Celery Salt
  • 1 teaspoon MSG
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder


  • 1 tub Full Fat Sour Cream
  • 1 White Onion, diced
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • 1 Teaspoon Sherry Vinegar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Hot Sauce (use one that’s got a vinegar back to it, like Crystal)
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Bon Appetit
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
  • Optional: 5-8 squirts of Worcestershire sauce (makes it saltier. Not everyone likes this)


1 Put diced onions in the microwave and cook, uncovered for 8 minutes or until they look wilted and starting to dry.

2Melt butter in a frying pan on Medium High heat. Add the onions to the pan and caramelize them until they are brown. Don’t wimp out

3When onions are brown, add the spices and the Sherry Vinegar and stir for 30 seconds. Remove from heat and let cool

4Once cool, add the onion mix, and remaining ingredients to the sour cream, mixing well. Let sit in fridge for at least 40 minutes to get flavour development. Serve.
